DIGIT-EYES AUDIO LABELING SYSTEM ADVANCES INDEPENDENCE FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Digital Miracles, LLC, is pleased to announce a major advancement in assistive technology for people who are blind and visually impaired. The Digit-Eyes Audio Labeling System has been approved for sale on the Apple Apps Store. As of June 23rd, the millions of people worldwide with substantial vision loss can begin downloading the iPhone application to recognize and label the important items in their lives.

Reasonably priced at $29.99, the Digit-Eyes phone app is a powerful tool that fits into any budget and life- style, turning challenging tasks into easy, safe activities. The Digit-Eyes system gives users a simple way to make custom labels for everyday items and it identifies packaged goods-joining advanced software with the iPhone, the Internet, home computers, printers, and inexpensive off-the-shelf labels. People of almost any visual ability can now put groceries away and grab the right prescription bottle independently.

“This is the most exciting product I’ve worked on,” says Nancy Miracle, president of Digital Miracles and software engineer with 40 years experience. “The limited functions and high cost of existing assistive devices just seemed wrong, so our objective was to develop a product that performed better than any comparable technology and offer it at about 10% of the price. Combining the need for identification with a natural, powerful and robust tool like the iPhone made the project irresistible.”

With Digit-Eyes, users can print custom text labels or record audio labels that they make by scanning specially coded labels and speaking into their phones. They attach the labels to household items, and the messages are played back whenever the codes are rescanned with their iPhones. This Digit-Eyes app can also scan manufacturer codes (UPC, EAN, ISBN) and say what’s inside the package after checking the vast Digit-Eyes product database. Each iPhone stores over five hundred hours of information and can be used just about anywhere.

“This product is amazing! By labeling leftovers with their contents and date refrigerated, I can determine if my dinner will be edible or not. Next, I’ll be labeling my jungle of AC adapters so I’ll never again have to guess what they all go to. The ease of use and flexibility of the process make it an invaluable tool!”

Randy Builder, Seattle, Washington.

The first public display of Digit-Eyes is at the National Federation of the Blind convention in Dallas, Texas, July 4 – 7, booth B113. The exhibit then moves to the American Council of the Blind convention July 10 – 15 in Phoenix, Arizona, booth #41. Attendees can experience the use and capability of the system with hands-on demonstrations. Details, explanations, and examples will be available at both conventions, or immediately on-line at www.DIGIT-EYES.com.

Digital Miracles, LLC, the parent company of Digit-Eyes, is a Texas-based corporation that develops customized software solutions. The Digit-Eyes Audio Labeling System was created by a team of engineers, software designers and members of the visually impaired community.

So You Bought a New Mac, Now What?

Congratulations, you’re one of the approximately three million lucky so and so’s who got a new Apple computer so far this year. It’s agreed, that sleek aluminum unibody looks gorgeous on your desk, but now that it’s out of the box, are you getting the most out of your new computer?

For those of you ready to dive in but just need a gentle nudge in the right direction, here are the first five things you should know about your Apple computer.

Across the top of every screen lies the menu bar. It has consistencies across every application and is the key to the functionality of your system and commands. Ever-present in the top left corner is the Apple Menu, a drop down menu which holds root level commands over your basic system preferences. The Apple Menu contains some handy day to day operations, including force quit, software update, and a shortcut to your 10 most recent documents and applications.

To the right of the Apple is the active application preferences menu and next to that is a file menu (open, save, print etc.) edit menu (cut, copy, paste) a number of app-specific menus, (bookmarks, view, share,) and finally the help menu. It’s comforting to know that whatever program you happen to be using, the basic navigation is essentially the same. From the right side you can expect to see your Spotlight icon, active user name, keyboard language, clock, speaker volume, Bluetooth, Time Machine and various other icons.

The Dock is the graphical panel that shows your currently open and chosen favourite applications. You can customize the dock to sit on the left, bottom or right of your screen, or disappear altogether and reappear with the scroll of the mouse.

The Dashboard also lives in the dock and contains various handy tools and widgets such as calculators, weather reports, dictionaries and stock-tickers at the click of a button. There are hundreds of fun and/or useful little apps available for download at the Apple site.

This is the blazing fast and ultra-thorough search tool that appears at the uppermost right corner of your screen. It indexes every character in your entire home folder and can find not only files, folders and applications that match your search term, but also documents, web pages and emails that contain that term. It’ll also display exactly where in your home folder said document resides.

It’s true, sometimes bad things happen to good computers, and if something in your computer is going to fail, chances are it’ll be your hard drive. Time Machine is the built in, automatic back-up tool that can prevent that sinking feeling you get when you realize your computer has died, taking with it your family photos, music collection, masters thesis or client database. Simply attach external hard drive and never think of it again.

The actual science on this matter is misunderstood. Apple quite rightly claims that its computers are immune to all viruses that infect PC’s. However that doesn’t mean there aren’t malicious files out there that can affect the Apple OS. True, the Unix platform on which the operating system is based is more robust and secure, but immunity to malware simply does not exist. The short answer is that yes, Mac computers can be susceptible to various non-PC based viruses. Anecdotally speaking, neither I, nor anyone I’ve ever met, has ever (knowingly) suffered from a computer virus.

In the future we will explore some more indepth features of your Apple computer. For now, the most important lesson to learn is that, short of physically breaking it, there’s not much you can do to ruin your new computer, As long as you keep your data safe, you can feel free to explore your Mac system, change the settings and layout to your specific needs and comforts without fear. Enjoy.

Databases – Borland Database Engine (BDE) The Borland Database Engine (BDE) is provided with those Borland and Corel products that provide database access, including Paradox, dBase, Delphi, C++ Builder, and Quatro Pro. It provides a non-Microsoft way to access data in Paradox, DBase, FoxPro, and ASCII databases. It also provides an ODBC connection to other types of databases.

After the BDE is installed, it must be configured – normally using the BDE Administrator - to define the aliases that are used to specify the databases. (ODBC, ADO, and the like also require similar configuration.) (An API allows configuration to be made programatically.)

In general, when I write programs, I currently use ADO to perform this function because its functionality is built into the current MS Windows operating systems, and, therefore, I don’t have to worry about installing the BDE for my applications to work.

BDE Administrator There are several ways to run the BDE administrator

From the Control Panel, double click BDE Administrator This appears to be the same program as the one run through Delphi, except that it is in its own window, it provides a tab to configure the drivers, and it does not provide a way to see the tables and fields. Start / Programs / Borland Delphi 5 / BDE Administrator This appears to be identical to using the Control Panel From inside Delphi, select Database / Explore This opens as a Delphi child window. It provides a ways to see the tables and fields, but does not provide a tab to configure the drivers. Start / Programs / Borland Delphi 5 / Database Explorer This appears to be identical to Delphi’s Database / Explore except that it is in its own window.

A yellow-green box around an icon means that the connection is working (open) and that you can get data about the tables and fields in that database.

A green arrow means that the alias definition has been edited but is not yet saved (applied).

Parameters with bold letters can not be changed.

Adding a new alias The purpose of the BDE administrator is to add and configure alias definitions. To add a new alias

Be sure that the focus is on a table which is not Opened From the menu, select Object / New… From the combobox, select Standard for Paradox, DBase, FoxPro, or ASCII databases. Otherwise, select one of the supported ODBC types. Click OK and enter the BDE alias name in the highlighted box At this point, you need to enter configuration data which varies based on the type of database In the lefthand pane, the green arrow indicates that the alias definition has not been saved. From the menu, select Object / Apply (or use the associated toolbar button) to save the alias definition. (Of course, you can Delete it if you want.) For Paradox, DBase, FoxPro, or ASCII databases, select Standard and set the Default Driver to one of the following Paradox DBase FoxPro ASCIIDRV Once a new alias is added via the control panel, you need to close and re-open Delphi in order to see it via Database / Explore.

Borland provides sample Paradox, dBase, and Interbase/Firebird databases under

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\Data When connecting to these over a network, and when the fileserver is NT, 2000, or XP, you will probably have to add Write and Change (or Modify) to the default directory permissions for Everyone.

Paradox Databases A Paradox database is a directory - tables are stored as one or more files within the directory.

To create a new alias, follow the instructions above, select the Standard driver, and set the following parameters.

PDOXUSRS.NET Paradox tables are generally locked on a «per record» basis. This is managed by having all Paradox lock requests written to a single «Lock file» (one per database/directory). These lock files contain a pointer to the directory containing PDOXUSRS.NET. In order for this to work, each machine must access PDOXUSRS.NET using the exact same drive letter and path. If the drive letter is «p» on one machine, then it must be «p» for every machine on the network.

Typically, PDOXUSRS.NET and the databases are all on the database server, but in different directories. However, they do not have to be on the same machine. When several database servers are used, one of them is normally selected for PDOXUSRS.NET and none of the databases can be used if that server is off-line.

Locking problems are usually caused by misconfiguring one of these. If these rules are not followed, then there are severe locking problems.

In English, what this means is that every system on the network must have the drive containing the database mapped to the same drive letter. If one system has the database mapped to drive-p, then every computer with access to that database must also have it mapped to drive-p. In addition, the path to the lock file must be the same on all the machines

You must be sure that the computer that actually hosts the database does not use a local drive letter (such as the c-drive). If the database is accessed via p:/myTables on one machine, it must use the same path on all the machines.

Setting the PDOXUSRS.NET file path Open the BDE Administrator via the Control Panel (this can’t be set if you open it via Delphi). Click the Configuration tab and set

Configuration / Drivers / Native / Paradox / Net Dir to the location of PDOXUSRS.NET.

Notice that PDOXUSRS.NET is not associated with a specific database. When there is more than one Paradox database, then they all share the single PDOXUSRS.NET file.

MS Access Databases MS Access databases are stored as *.mdb files - all the tables are stored in that file.

With MS Access tables, the BDE implies that you have access to 5 internal MSys* tables, however, only MSysAccessObjects can actually be read. (I don’t suggest modifying this … just look.)

The BDE provides an MS Access interface, or you can select the appropriate ODBC driver.

To create a new alias using the BDE driver, follow the instructions above, select the MSACCESS driver, and set the following parameter.

My copy of Delphi 5 came with BDE administrator 5.01. I tried updating the BDE to version 5.2, but I still could not read MS Access 2000 files when MSACCESS was selected. Therefore, I suggest using an ODBC connection if you need to read one.

To create a new alias using the ODBC driver, follow the instructions above, select the appropriate ODBC driver (»Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)» on my system), and set one of the following parameters.

The MS Access lock file is generally created in the same directory as the *.mdb file. This is why you need to open an MS Access database as readonly and exclusive when it is located on a CD ROM (this keeps the system from trying to create it on a readonly disk).

FoxPro Databases A FoxPro database is a directory - tables are stored as one or more files within the directory.

To create a new alias, follow the instructions above, select the Standard driver, and set the following parameters.

Firebird/Interbase Databases A Firebird database is a single file – normally either *.fdb or *.gdb - all the tables are stored in that file.

To create a new alias, follow the instructions above, select the INTRBASE driver, and set the following parameters.

To connect to a remote firebird server, you MUST include the drive letter after the computer name.

CompName:C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\Data\employee.gdb The Interbase help says that the following format is also acceptable in ISQL – but it definitely does NOT work in the Database Explore. \\CompName\C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\Data\employee.gdb

Firebird is the open source version of Borland’s Interbase database server.

ODBC Connection Though I don’t recommend it, Firbird databases can be accessed via ODBC.

Under Control Panel / ODBC (the exact path is OS dependent), create a System DSN alias based on INTERSOLV Interbase ODBC Driver (*.gdb). The Data Source Name is the ODBC alias name that you create. In order to use the sample database on a remote server, set Database Name to

CompName:C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\Data\employee.gdb In the BDE Administrator, add a new BDE alias using the INTERSOLV InterBase ODBC Driver and enter the new ODBC alias name in ODBC DSN.

The ODBC Data Source Administrator is also available from the Database Explorer menu via Object / ODBC Administrator…

PhotoFiltre is a complete image retouching program. It allows you to do simple or advanced adjustments to an image and apply a vast range of filters on it. It is simple and intuitive to use, and has an easy learning curve. The toolbar, giving you access to the standard filters with just a few clicks, gives PhotoFiltre a robust look. Filters: Its wide range of filters allows novice users to familiarize themselves with the world of graphics. You can find the standard adjustment functions (Brightness, contrast, dyed, saturation, gamma correction) and also artistic filters (watercolor, pastels, Indian ink, pointillism, puzzle effect). Vectorial selections: PhotoFiltre uses two types of vectorial selections. The first type uses automatic shapes (rectangle, ellipse, triangle, rhombus, rounded rectangle). The second type corresponds to the lasso and polygon. They both allow a customized form by drawing a shape by hand or using a series of lines. Every selection can be saved into a seperate file, to be used later on. PhotoMasque module: With PhotoMasque you can create advanced effects of contour and transparency on your images by using preset masks. These masks are grayscale images, where white is the transparancy color, while opacity increases as the shades of gray become darker. Black means complete opacity. PhotoMasque comes with several basic masks to inspire you to create your own masks…

Rainlendar is a feature rich calendar application that is easy to use and doesn’t take much space on your desktop. The application is platform independent so you can run it both on Windows and on Linux. The appearance can be customized with skins and you can even mix different skins together. It is possible to use Rainlendar with other calendar applications too. Rainlendar uses the standard iCalendar format to store its events and tasks so you can easily transfer them between applications. All the coming events are shown in a separate list where you can see the week’s events at one glance. You can decide how many days in advance you want to see in the list. Different events can have a different appearance in the list so you can easily spot the important events from the others. The icons in the calendar are also available in the event list and other windows to make it easier to separate the events. You can also have a separate list for your long term tasks. The task list can be arranged several ways so that you can keep it better organized. You can also set a due date for the tasks to make sure you’ll remember to do them on time. You’ll also get an alarm when an event or task is due so that you don’t miss it. The alarm can be defined to be set off any duration before the actual event so you have time to prepare for it…

GoldMine will replace the registry keys when it is restarted with the correct information. The BDE Configuration file (IDAPI32.CFG)

When using SQL databases, the BDE and GoldMine use an alias to access the SQL database that is stored in the IDAPI32.CFG. It may become necessary to have the BDE installed locally on some machines to meet special needs. It is also possible that the workstation already has a compatible version for the BDE installed. Local installations will use the local configuration settings for the BDE. This will work as long as the local IDAPI32.CFG has the information required by GoldMine in it that is in the network IDAPI32.CFG. This information can be manually added to the local configuration file or the network configuration file can be merged into the local file. The third option is to have the local BDE use the network IDAPI32.CFG file.

To manually add information to the IDAPI32.CFG file, use the BDE Administrator to create the needed aliases. More information is available in the Enterprise Administrators Guide for GoldMine 4.0 Enterprise edition and the FrontOffice 2000 MSSQL 7 Administrators Guide on creating an alias with the BDE Administrator. Both can be downloaded from the GoldMine Support section of our website athttp://www.frontrange.com/. The GoldMine 4.x manuals are located with the GoldMine 5.x manuals.

The BDE Administrator for the local BDE can be used to merge the network IDAPI32.CFG with the local IDAPI32.CFG. This ideal for GoldMine users who use laptop computers and dock with the network using both a local and networked copy of GoldMine as needed. The following instructions explain how to merge configuration files.
